  • In 1519, Portuguese explorer, an employ of Spain, started a long journey to discover the western route to the spice island of Indonesia via the south America. South America is a continent where several countries like Chile, Argentina etc. are located. After navigating through Strait of Magellan, In November 1520, their fleet entered an unfamiliar ocean. He called this body of water Mar Pacifico, which in both Portuguese and Spanish means “Peaceful Sea”.
  • Pacific Ocean is also called “Father of Oceans”. It covers one-third (1/3rd ) of the surface Earth. By volume, the Pacific contains more than half of the world’s ocean waters. Due to plate tectonics, the Pacific is currently sinking.
  • The deepest point on this planet (Earth) is located in Pacific Ocean, “Mariana Trench” which sometimes called as “Challenger Deep”. This Deep has a depth of 7 miles or 11 km (10,900m).
