Table of Contents – If a Number is Decreased by 4 and Divided by 6 (Problem Solved)

  • If a number is decreased by 4 and divided by 6.
  • The result is 8.
  • If 2 is subtracted from the number and divided by 5
  • What is the number?

Important Points to Solve the Problem

The required result can be figure out in this way.

Let suppose the number is y.

Now, decreasing this number by 4

y – 4

and dividing by 6

(y – 4)/6

The result is 8

(y – 4)/6 = 8 ________ (i)

Value of y can be figure out easily from equation (i) by just simplifying it (y = 52).

Now, number is known to us (y = 52), after subtracting 2 (52 – 2 = 50) and dividing the result by 5 (50/5 = 10), we get 10 which is our required answer.

To Find

Number = ?

Solution

Video Lecture

Let suppose

Number = y

According to the given condition

(y – 4)/6 = 8

y – 4 = 8 x 6

y – 4 = 48

y = 48 + 4

y = 52

According to the second given condition

52 – 2 = 50

50/5 = 10

Required Number = 10 answer

Conclusion

If a number is decreased by 4 and divided by 6, the result is 8. The result would be 10 if 2 is subtracted from the number and then it is divided by 5.
