Things to Remember
- Davis Strait joins Baffin Bay with Labrador Sea and separates Kalaallit Nunaat from Baffin Islands who belongs to Canada (Capital: Ottawa). In terms of area, Canada follows Russia who comes at number first despite the fall of USSR in 1991. But credit of holding world’s largest coastline goes to Canada, which is 202,080 km and Greenland comes at number four. However, Greenland holds record of world’s greatest island with an enormous area i.e. 21,66,086 sqkm. This strait got the name because of explorer John Davis who was looking for northwest passage. By 1650s it was used for whale hunting.
- Florida Strait is a reversed L-shaped trough that separates Florida from Cuba and Bahama Platform. Its southern arm open westward into the Gulf of Mexico while its northern arm open into the Atlantic Ocean at the northern end of the Bahama Platform. Atlantic Ocean is second largest ocean whose average depth is 3,926m. It meets with Pacific Ocean through Magellan Strait.
- Magellan Strait is considered as the most important natural passage between two big oceans i.e. Atlantic and Pacific Ocean. It is the only sea route between Atlantic and Pacific Ocean, separating mainland South-America to the north and Tierra Del Fuego to the south. Tierra Del Fuego (Land of Fire) is an archipelago off the southernmost tip of South-American mainland, across the strait of Magellan.
- Bass Strait separates Australasia from Tasmania. The maximum length is 500 km (310 miles), maximum width is 350 km (220 miles) and maximum depth is 155 m (509 ft.). Tasmania is an island of Australasia.
- Cook Strait separates South Island (Te Weipounamu) from North Island (Te-Ikha-a-Maui). It runs next to the capital city, Wellington and connects the Tasman Sea on the northwest with the South Pacific Ocean on the southeast. Its currency is New Zealand Dollar (NZD).
